Rescuers Pull Out 3-Year-Old Girl from Rubble Four Days after Quake in Turkey

Rescuers and onlookers were greatly overwhelmed after a three-year-old girl was pulled out alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in the Turkish city of Izmir, a “miracle” which occurred 91 hours after a powerful earthquake hit Turkey and Greece.

Rescuers and onlookers were greatly overwhelmed after a three-year-old girl was pulled out alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in the Turkish city of Izmir, the local mayor said on Tuesday, a “miracle” which occurred 91 hours after a powerful earthquake hit Turkey and Greece.

“We have witnessed a miracle in the 91st hour,” Izmir mayor Tunc Soyer said in a Twitter post. “Rescue teams pulled out four-year-old Ayda alive. Along with the great pain we have experienced, we have this joy as well.”

The child was wrapped in a thermal blanket and placed on a stretcher before being sent to a hospital.

Rescue workers and bystanders were amazed and surprised, applauding and chanting “God is great!” upon the rescue of the child.

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca identified the young girl as Ayda Gezgin on a tweet and posted a video of her inside an ambulance.

According to rescuer Nusret Aksoy, he was searching through the ruins of the collapsed eight-floor building when he suddenly heard a child scream and immediately requested the crowd to remain silent. He later found the girl next to a dishwasher.

Aksoy said Ayda waved at him, told him her name and said that she was alright.

“I got goosebumps, and my colleague Ahmet cried,” he said.

The child was the 107th person to have been pulled out of collapsed buildings alive.

Ayda’s rescue came a day after a 3-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl were also retrieved alive from the ruins of buildings in Izmir.
