NCSC Discloses Large Scale Cyberattacks Against UK Health Systems

The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) fourth Annual Review revealed that the UK health system was constantly cyberattacked during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) fourth Annual Review revealed that the UK health system was constantly cyberattacked during the COVID-19 pandemic.  

The NCSC reportedly faced an average of 60 attacks per month which totaled to 723 incidents between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020.

The COVID-19 related events were tallied at 200 which highlighted the vulnerability of the National Healthcare Service (NHS.) 

The NCSC said that the instances of high-risk and critical vulnerabilities with the NHS which was observed in the 51,000 indicators of compromise (IoCs) with the health service.

There were also 15,354 reported campaigns that had used the COVID-19 pandemic to scam people into clicking on a link or opening an attachment containing malicious software.

The NCSC reported that they have performed threat hunting on 1.4 million NHS endpoints, and rolled out its Active Cyber Defence (ACD) service to 235 frontline health bodies along with their  Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS), launched in April in response to the attacks.

The NCSC also said it was part of ensuring the seven new emergency Nightingale hospitals were built with cybersecurity in mind, and engaged with more than 1200 “essential service providers” in the public and private sector to provide security.

NCSC CEO, Lindy Cameron said that their work was made possible with the cooperation of both the private and public sectors.

“This has all been achieved with the fantastic support of government, businesses and citizens and I would urge them to continue contributing to our collective cybersecurity,” said Cameron.
