SEAL Team 6 have rescued an American hostage in northern Nigeria. Philip Walton, who was abducted by a criminal gang over the weekend.

Philip Walton was abducted last Tuesday from his home at Massalata in southern Niger but was recovered in Nigeria.

The kidnappers reportedly demanded ransom from Walton’s father while they kept Walton in the small village of Niamey in southwestern Niger.

According to the operation report, six captors were involved, and five were killed during Walton’s rescue while one got away.

“U.S. forces conducted a hostage rescue operation during the early hours of 31 October in Northern Nigeria to recover an American citizen held hostage by a group of armed men,” said Chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman.

According to Hoffman, Walton is already in the custody of the US State Department.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that they met their commitment to the safe return of all US citizens taken captive abroad.

“We delivered on that commitment late last night in Nigeria, where some of our bravest and most skilled warriors rescued a US citizen,” said Pompeo.

US officials had feared the kidnappers would sell him to terrorists operating in the region/
