Militants Kill Dozens in Western Ethiopia

A group of armed men carried out a “horrendous” attack in the restive Oromia region of Ethiopia, government authorities said on Monday.

A group of armed men carried out a “horrendous” attack in the restive Oromia region of Ethiopia, government authorities said on Monday.

In a statement, the regional government of Oromia said that the militants from the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) were the ones behind the attack in an area of western Ethiopia known as Wollega on Sunday.

“Peaceful civilians were killed… in a horrendous way,” the government’s statement read, without providing further details regarding the death toll of the attack.

A survivor of the attack said that the incident occurred after soldiers within the location left their stations all of a sudden, providing opportunity for the gunmen to round up the civilians and slaughter them.

“After collecting us, they opened fire on us, and then afterwards looted cattle and burnt down houses,” said the survivor, who spoke in condition of anonymity due to security concerns.

“After collecting us, they opened fire on us, and then afterwards looted cattle and burnt down houses,” the survivor said. “I have counted more than 50 corpses, and I know there were others hit by bullets.”

OLA is a group of armed fighters that parted ways from the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), a resistance organization that was banished from Ethiopia for years but has been allowed to return to the African country after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed assumed office in 2018.

Abiy on Monday condemned the horrific killings, saying that he had dispatched security forces to the area of the attack.
