Protesters and Police clashed in Barcelona after mass demonstrations were held against the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions in Catalonia.

Protesters and Police clashed in Barcelona after mass demonstrations were held against the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions in Catalonia.

Spanish police reported that at least 1,500 people gathered in front of the Catalan government headquarters in Plaça Sant Jaume.

The demonstration was reportedly organized by the far-left pro-independence CUP party

The protest had remained peaceful until some protesters started throwing projectiles and fencing at the police.

In response, Mossos d’Esquadra police officers were forced to use batons and tear gas rounds to disperse the protesters.

The protesters also erected barricades and burning dumpsters at the  Parc de la Ciutadella and the Estació de França train station.

“A mix of far-left, far-right, and negationists, attack the Catalan police in protest against COVID restrictions ordered by Catalonia’s government,” said Spanish Judiciary Council &  ex-member of the Catalan Parliament  Alfons López Tena

The US Embassy in Spain warned that the situation may develop even further and could pose a threat to public safety.

The embassy warned US citizens and staff to exercise  caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
