Hindu homes vandalized and burned in Bangladesh over rumors of alleged Facebook post slandering Islam and showing support for France.

The office of the local Union Parishad Chairman Bankumar Shiv and the home Shankar Debnath a school headmaster were set on fire along with other Hindu homes at the Korbanpur village under Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla.

The Bangra Bazar Police Station reported that Shankar was arrested for hurting religious sentiments along with a resident of nearby Andikot village.

Md Abul Fazal Mir, deputy commissioner of Cumilla district said everything was under control after the locals carried out arson attacks on home of the accused and the office.

Mir added that those who committed the arson would be charged administratively too.

According to locals, Shankar reportedly commented on a Facebook post related to France defending the publishing of offensive cartoons and  allegedly praised President Emmanuel Macron for taking steps against “inhumane ideologies.”

Shankar’s action reportedly made other residents angry which resulted in the arson.

The police launched a case under the Digital Security Act against Shankar and the other accused while four platoons have been deployed in the village to prevent violence from erupting.
