Suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants have killed 19 people in a village in eastern Congo last Oct. 28, according to local sources.

The attack took place at night in Baeti village in the eastern province of North Kivu.

Local civil rights group head Kinos Katuho told global news agency Agence France-Presse that seventeen men and two women died.

The administrator of Beni territory confirmed the death toll.

Katuho also said that several people are still missing and that the ADF burned down a church and 40 houses.

Katuho also said, “The army was alerted, but did not intervene.”

“It really creates pain in our hearts, a total panic in the village,” development committee head Masisa Mushogoro said.

“We don’t know if tomorrow the ADF will come back here again,” Mushogoro added.

The ADF is an armed Islamist group that originated in Uganda in the 1990s but has expanded its operations to eastern Congo.

Data from the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office estimated that the ADF has killed over 1,000 civilians since the beginning of 2019.
