Belarus Shuts Land Borders with all Neighboring Countries Except Russia

The Belarusian Border Control Committee has closed down its land borders with neighboring countries except Russia citing COVID-19 concerns.

The Belarusian Border Control Committee has closed down its land borders with neighboring countries except Russia citing COVID-19 concerns.

Passage into Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine have been restricted to allegedly protect the country from the pandemic.

The Committee said only Belarusian citizens and trucks were being allowed to enter Belarus through land checkpoints while air travel is still permitted.

The move followed  Belarusian officials’ claims that its neighbors have tried to destabilize the situation in the country which raised questions from the opposition.

Opposition candidate Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya claimed that the border closure is a sign that President Alexander Lukashenko is panicking amid weeks of unrest.

“The closure of the borders and the latest appointments signal the weakening of his authority,”  said Tsikhanouskaya.

Lukashenko also reshuffled his top officials, appointing Interior Minister Yuri Karayev and Security Council Secretary Valery Vakulchik his envoys to the westernmost Grodno and Brest regions without prior warning.
