Study Reveals COVID-19 Variant from Spain is Spreading Across Europe

According to a new study published on Thursday morning by researchers in Spain and Switzerland, Spain is the origin of a new COVID-19 variant that has become prevalent in numerous nations across Europe.

According to a new study published on Thursday morning by researchers in Spain and Switzerland, Spain is the origin of a new COVID-19 variant that has become prevalent in numerous nations across Europe.

The study, which was published in a pre-print and has yet to be peer-reviewed, revealed that the variant accounts for almost 80 percent of the virus sequenced in Spain, 90 percent in the United Kingdom, 60 percent in Ireland, 30 percent in Switzerland and 40 percent in the Netherlands.

The variant The authors from the University of Basel and the SeqCOVID-Spain consortium explained that although there are hundreds of variants of the virus floating around Europe, “very few have spread as successfully and become as prevalent” as this one. The authors said that the variant has also been found in Norway, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Latvia, and Sweden.

The study also said that while there is no evidence that this variant is more contagious than others, its extension was fueled by loosening travel restrictions and social distancing measures in the summer.
