Mexican authorities found on Wednesday night the remains of 59 bodies in clandestine graves in a region of central Mexico that has been suffering some of the highest levels of drug violence over the last few years.

The discovery was made in the Salvatierra municipality of the Guanajuato state, where the homicide rate has been surging amid a raging turf war between rival drug cartels, leaving dozens of people killed or kidnapped every month.

During a press conference, head of Mexico’s National Search Commission Karla Quintana said that at least 10 of the bodies were women and most of the bodies belonged to very young people, including child and teenagers.

Quintana also told local reporters that alarm raised by relatives of missing persons led to the largest discovery of clandestine graves in Guanajuato. “We have more possible positive developments, with which we will continue working here until we have finished the job,” she said.
