A knife-wielding suspect has beheaded a woman, killed two other people, and wounded several more during a suspected terror attack at the Notre Dame Basilica church in the French city of Nice.
“I confirm that everything suggests a terrorist attack in the Notre-Dame Basilica of # Nice06, ” said Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi on his Twitter account.
Estrosi explained that the suspect did not stop shouting Allahu Akhbar even under medication after being shot and arrested.
Nice police reported that the beheading victim was a 70-year old woman while the man who was killed inside the church was a Sexton.
The last casualty was a woman aged around 40 who was stabbed in the church but managed to escape to a nearby bar where she died due to her injuries.
The police managed to shoot the suspect but he also died moments after.
Before the suspect died, he identified himself as Brahim and claimed that he acted alone.
Police spokeswoman Florence Gavello reassured the public that the situation is under control.
French members of the elite tactical police unit RAID have also searched the basilica to check for more threats and clues.
The attack came while France is under high alert for terrorist attacks after French middle school teacher Samuel Paty was also beheaded in Paris earlier this month.
