India’s National Investigation Agency Launches Raids on Homes of NGO Employees in Kashmir over Alleged Fund Diversion

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has conducted raids on the homes of NGO workers and activists in Kashmir for their probe on the alleged diversion of funds meant for charitable work to secessionist and separatist activities.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has conducted raids on the homes of  NGO workers and activists in Kashmir for their probe on the alleged diversion of funds meant for charitable work to secessionist and separatist activities.

The NIA raids took place in the offices of Falah-e-Aam Trust, Charity Alliance, English daily Greater Kashmir, Human Welfare Foundation, JK Yateem Foundation, Salvation Movement,  and J&K Voice of Victims (JKVoV) for their alleged links to the funded diversion.

The Charity Alliance and Human Welfare Foundation are based in Delhi, while the rest are based in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar.

Aside from the NGO and print offices, the homes of Khurram Parvez, coordinator of J&K Coalition of Civil Society; his associates Parvez Ahmad Bukhari, Parvez Ahmad Matta and Swati Sheshadri; Parveena Ahanger, chairperson of Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons, NGO Athrout, and the Greater Kailash Trust were also searched.

Former Delhi Minority Commission chief Zafarul-Islam Khan’s home was also one of the places searched by the NIA.

“Several incriminating documents and electronic devices have been seized. Further investigation in the case is continued,” said the NIA.

Anuradha Bhasin, the editor of local daily Kashmir Times whose offices were shuttered by authorities earlier this month speculated that the raids were done a day after India’s government enacted a series of new laws which allowed any of its nationals to buy land in the disputed region.

“This comes a day after the disempowering land laws. Can this be just a coincidence?” said Bhasin.
