A suspect was arrested outside the French consulate in Jeddah after he allegedly stabbed a guard amid religious backlash and terror attacks in France.

“The French consulate general in Jeddah this morning was subjected to a knife stabbing incident targeting a security guard – an employee of a private security company – and immediately the Saudi security forces arrested the perpetrator,” confirmed the French Embassy in Riyadh.

Saudi Police spokesman Maj. Mohammed al-Ghamdi, said the special force for diplomatic security was able to arrest the suspect after he stabbed the guard “using a sharp tool.”

The guard was hospitalized due to the injury he received while the suspect has been detained.

It is unknown what was the motive for the attack but it came alongside the attack in Nice which was after several Islamic countries condemned France’s defense of the offensive cartoon featuring their prophet.
