A man armed with a long knife was arrested in the southeastern French city of Lyon just hours after the bloody attack in NIce.

Police said that the suspect, an Afghan national in his 20s reportedly tried to board a tram with the weapon on him.

“He was carrying a 30cm (12-inch) knife and seemed ready to take action,” said Pierre Oliver, the mayor of Lyon’s Second Arrondissement.

The suspect had already been flagged to French intelligence services and is being questioned by authorities.

In Sartrouville,  another suspect has been arrested near the Saint-Martin church after his father tipped off police that he intended to  “do as in Nice.”

Police have evacuated and secured the area around the while bomb disposal teams investigated the suspect’s car but no traces of explosives were found.

France has raised the country’s terror threat alert system to its highest level since the Nice attack in the morning.
