Facebook’s India Policy Chief Resigns over Alleged Anti-Muslim Posts

Ankhi Das, Facebook’s top public policy executive in India, has resigned from her post months after facing criticisms due to her alleged failure to properly tackle hate speech on the platform.

Ankhi Das, Facebook’s top public policy executive in India, has resigned from her post months after facing criticisms due to her alleged failure to properly tackle hate speech on the platform.

In August, the Wall Street Journal accused Das of being politically bigoted after refusing to take down anti-Muslim posts that a Hindu nationalist legislator posted on the platform.

The New York-based newspaper said Das told employees that “punishing violations by politicians from Mr Modi’s [Prime Minister Narendra Modi] party would damage the company’s business prospects in the country.”

After receiving intense backlash due to the report, Das filed criminal complaint against several people for allegedly defaming her.

Several human rights also called for the resignation of Facebook’s policy head in India for allegedly violating the platform’s rules on hate speech.

“Ankhi was one of our earliest employees in India and played an instrumental role in the growth of the company and its services over the last 9 years,”Ajit Mohan, Facebook’s managing director for India, said in a statement. “She has been a part of my leadership team over the last 2 years, a role in which she has made enormous contributions. We are grateful for her service and wish her the very best for the future.”

Aside from the hate speech controversy, Facebook has also been accused of not stepping up its efforts in addressing the rampant misinformation or toxic content on the platform.

“We prohibit hate speech and content that incites violence and we enforce these policies globally without regard to anyone’s political position or party affiliation,” Facebook said in a statement.
