Amy Coney Barrett Sworn in to the U.S. Supreme Court

Amy Coney Barrett has been sworn in to the Supreme Court at about 9 p.m. on Oct. 26 at a White House ceremony, shortly after the Senate confirmed her nomination by a 52-48 vote.

“This is a momentous day for America, for the United States Constitution and for the fair and impartial rule of law,” U.S. President Donald Trump, who nominated Barrett to fill the seat of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, said before the swearing-in ceremony.

Less than two hours after the confirmation, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas swore in Barrett under a constitutional oath at the ceremony held in the South Lawn of the White House where the audience practiced distancing and wore masks unlike last month’s White House Rose Garden event.

“The oath that I have solemnly taken tonight means at its core that I will do my job without any fear or favor, and that I will do so independently of both the political branches and of my own preferences,” Barrett said, calling it a “privilege to be asked to serve my country.”

Except for Senator Susan Collins of Maine, all Republican Senators voted to confirm Barrett, solidifying a 6-3 conservative majority in the highest court in the country.

Barrett joins the court as the justices prepare to work on several significant petitions, including those related to the presidential election on Nov. 3.

Trump had repeatedly said that he wanted Barrett to be in place to vote for any election-related matters in the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice John Roberts will administer her judicial oath on Oct. 27.
