China to Impose Sanctions on U.S. Firms for Selling Weapon Systems to Taiwan

China is preparing to slam sanctions against Lockheed Martin, Boeing Defense, Raytheon and other U.S. entities for taking part in the controversial arms sales of Washington to Taiwan, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry said on Monday.

China is preparing to slam sanctions against Lockheed Martin, Boeing Defense, Raytheon and other U.S. entities for taking part in the controversial arms sales of Washington to Taiwan, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry said on Monday.

“To safeguard our national interests, China decided to take necessary measures and levy sanctions on U.S. companies such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing Defense, and Raytheon, and those individuals and companies who behaved badly in the process of the arms sales,” China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian told the reporters in Beijing.

Zhao has not said what the sanctions would entail for the U.S. firms.

The Pentagon said last week that the U.S. State Department decided to approve the planned sale of three weapons systems to Taiwan, including sensors, missiles and artillery that approximately costs $1.8 billion.

However, China has expressed its strong disagreement to Washington’s move, saying that it has “severely violated the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques” and would take “necessary response” to the arms sale.

China has been claiming Taiwan as its wayward province, but the Taiwanese government remained adamant with the country’s declaration of independence in 1949.

The U.S. has no official diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, but it is bound by law to provide the East Asian nation with the necessities it needed to safeguard its own security.
