Agents of Venezuela’s Bolivarian Intelligence Service SEBIN raided the headquarters of the independent newspaper El Correo del Caroni in the southern city of Puerto Ordaz on Friday morning, confiscating numerous documents and editorial computers.

In a statement, the newspaper’s main editor Oscar Murillo said that the agents barred the Correo del Caroni’s lawyer took administrative employee Susana Reyes and journalist Maria Ramirez into custody.

Murillo also said that the SEBIN agents held the two employees at the intelligence service’s regional headquarters and interrogated them for about five hours without access to a lawyer or family members, and then released them without charge. He added that the SEBIN agents returned the confiscated documents but not the computer.

“Venezuelan authorities must stop harassing Correo del Caroní, its owner David Natera Febres, and its employees, and allow them to work without interference or intimidation. It is astounding that the Maduro government chooses to devote resources to fight the independent press, instead of bringing everything it has to bear on the economic, social, and health crises that continue to decimate Venezuela,” CPJ Central and South America Program Coordinator Natalie Southwick said in a statement.
