nPakistani Twitter users have started to mock the fake news from India that Karachi had become a war zone due to an alleged civil war between Sindhi and federal forces rocked the city being spread by Indian disinformation accounts.
“Indian disinformation accounts are exploiting Pakistan’s current political crisis and falsely claiming that the country is now experiencing urban warfare and other serious instability. Dangerous and disturbing; several of these accounts are verified, with large followings.” said Micheal Kugalman, a South Asia expert from the Wilson Center in the United States.
The fake news was based on an incident in Pakistan where Opposition leader and former prime minister Nawax Sharif’s son-in-law was arrested in Karachi.
The alleged misinformation accounts later spread information that the arrest was followed by heavy fighting between Sindhi and federal forces.
Pakistani Twitter users later created fictional accounts of the “civil war” with memes such as Godzilla attacking Lahore.
User Shehzad Ghias Shaikh (@Shehzad89) posted a photo of the Avengers movie and captioned it as ” This is Karachi airport.”
Even users in Turkey have joined in on the mockery, Elif Ahmet (@ElifAhmetTurkey) posted a promotional still from the TV show Vikings and said that according to Indian media, it was a scene of the#CivilWarInPakistan.
In response to the fake stories being circulated on social media the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority urged users to block accounts spreading misinformation.
