Brazilian President Rejects plan to Buy Chinese Vaccine Sinovac

Brazilian President Jair Blsonaro announced on Wednesday night that his government will not buy the COVID-19 vaccine from China’s Sinovac, less than 24 hours after Brazil’s health minister Eduardo Pazuello said that this vaccine would be included in the country’s immunization program.

Brazilian President Jair Blsonaro announced on Wednesday night that his government will not buy the COVID-19 vaccine from China’s Sinovac, less than 24 hours after Brazil’s health minister Eduardo Pazuello said that this vaccine would be included in the country’s immunization program.

During a press conference in Brasilia, President Bolsonaro told local reporters that Pazuello had been misinterpreted during his Tuesday meeting with Brazil’s governors, where he said that the ministry would buy the Sinovac vaccine to include in the immunization program, along with the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine. “For sure, we will not buy the Chinese vaccine,” Bolsonaro said.

Sao Paulo state biomedical research center, the Butantan Institute, is currently testing the Sinovac vaccine, and the state Governor João Doria said he hopes to have regulatory approval by the end of the year to start vaccinating people in the first quarter of 2021.

The reversal surprised state governors, with Maranhao state Governor Flavio Dino writing on his Twitter there was “general outrage.” Several other governors urged that vaccines be evaluated on science alone.
