Five people were killed and 20 others were wounded after an explosion in a four-story residential building in the southern port city of Karachi on Wednesday, according to rescue officials.

Security officers have already blockaded the area and the injured individuals were sent to several hospitals to receive medical treatments.

Faisal Edhi, head of the non-government rescue organization Edhi Foundation, said that at least seven of the wounded victims are in critical condition, adding that two of the dead people were security personnel of a bank located inside the building.

An eyewitness said that the blast has been heard even miles away from the site of explosion. Debris and other materials that went off from the partially destroyed building also damaged the windows of nearby establishments, as well as some vehicles parked close to the location of the blast.

Rescue officials are still trying to search for individuals and missing employees that have been trapped inside the rubble.

The cause of the explosion has not been determined yet and security officials are still investigating the incident. However, a senior police official said that it “seems to be a cylinder blast.”

A bomb disposal team has been dispatched to the scene to identify the source of the explosion.
