Saudi Crown Prince Accused of Ordering Assassination of Jamal Khashoggi

The fiancée of the assassinated Saudi dissident and columnist Jamal Khashoggi, together with a Washington-based human rights organization, accused the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of ordering the execution.

The fiancée of the assassinated Saudi dissident and columnist Jamal Khashoggi, together with a Washington-based human rights organization, accused the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of ordering the execution.

According to the lawsuit filed in District of Columbia federal court on Tuesday, Hatice Cengiz and Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) are seeking to hold the Crown Prince and other high-ranking officials accountable for the horrid death of The Washington Post columnist.

The complainants stated in the legal documents that Khashoggi was brutally tortured, killed and mutilated “pursuant to a directive of Defendant Mohammed bin Salman.”

The civil suit stated that the second most powerful figure in Saudi Arabia and the other 24 defendants “saw Khashoggi’s actions in the United States as an existential threat to their pecuniary and other interests and, accordingly, conspired to commit the heinous acts that are the subject of this suit.”

Cengiz said Khashoggi, a prominent critic of the Crown Prince’s administration, was harshly murdered during his 2018 visit to the kingdom’s Istanbul consulate where he was picking up documents needed for their planned marriage.

“Plotting to kill a United States resident writing for The Washington Post and heading a Washington-based organization subjects the defendants to the US justice system,” said Robert Harmala, one of the co-counsel of the complaint, together with Keith Harper and Faisal Gill.

“I am hopeful that we can achieve truth and justice for Jamal through this lawsuit,” Cengiz said in a statement. “I place my trust in the American civil justice system to give voice to what happened and hold those who did this accountable for their actions.”
