Greater Manchester, England Running Out of Hospital Beds Amid COVID-19 Pandemic, Leaked NHS Document Reveals

Hospitals in Greater Manchester, England are either full or running out of beds to treat the critically ill amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a leaked document from the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) revealed.

Hospitals in Greater Manchester, England are either full or running out of beds to treat the critically ill amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a leaked document from the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) revealed.

Hospitals in the city of Salford and in the towns of Stockport and Bolton were at maximum capacity last Oct. 16, leaving no spare beds to treat patients due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, according to the leaked document as reported by British news outlet The Guardian.

The document showed that 211 of the 257 critical care beds or 82% of the total supply were already being used last Oct. 16 by critically ill patients either with COVID-19 or with another illness.

An additional 110 patients were admitted 24 hours before the document was produced, bringing the total to 520.

“We are monitoring the situation with our hospital admissions, overall beds and ICU beds very, very closely,” a spokesperson for the NHS in Greater Manchester told The Guardian.

This comes amid local leaders in Greater Manchester trying to reach an agreement with the government over plans to place the region in a tier 3 or “very high” level alert of COVID-19 restrictions.

In a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and to other political leaders, Mayor Andy Burnham called for a parliamentary vote to reach a deal and decide the level of financial aid for areas under the tier 3 restrictions.

The U.K. has reported 16,989 daily cases, bringing the total amount of cases to 722,409.
